Network for Women in Science

Mission: The Network for Women in Science (NWiS) is a community at the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience, the UF Scripps Biomedical Research, and Florida Atlantic University dedicated to raising awareness and promoting change related to issues pertinent to female under-representation in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics)-related careers. We welcome all genders, and aim to build a community of support to foster the careers of scientists through community outreach, career workshops, and bias education.

NWiS hosts events, workshops, a mentoring program that are open to all. We also maintain a database of resources helpful to scientists at all career levels.

Lunch with a PI

NWiS hosted a lunch with Dr. Erin Calipari, Assistant Professor at Vanderbilt University. The discussion touched on topics including authorship and publication, work/life balance, and promoting the underrepresented in science.

Work Life Balance Panel

Our recent panel shared perspectives on work/life balance, strategies for setting boundaries, and tips for choosing a mentor. NWiS regularly holds panels and workshops on topics such as networking, alternative careers, and publishing.

Tri-institutional NWiS Mentorship program

In this small group mentorship program, trainees are paired with local, established scientists with the goal of expanding support networks and guiding professional development during critical career stages of female trainees.

Outreach

NWiS recently connected with local Girl Scouts by participating in events such as "Girls Take on..." and "Stem Career Exploration". NWiS outreach activities focus on engaging and mentoring girls to think scientifically and explore STEM careers.
